Prickly pear

Item No. 501250

Bot. name: Opuntia ficus-indica
Characteristics: The prickly pear cactus originally comes from the American continent and does not form long spines, but rather very fine thorns. In this country it only very rarely forms prickly pears. Should it succeed, the yellowish to purple fruits can be spooned like kiwis.
Cultivation & care:

Care instructions

ecocube contains coconut fiber granulate, clay granulate, compostable planting cup and plant seeds.

  • Remove the paper sleeve from the ecocube and pull back sticker.
  • Carefully pour about 30 ml of water on the planted seeds.
  • Keep the ecocube in a bright, very warm place (about 23°C) and water moderately until plants are germinating (approx. 20 ml about every 3 days). Make sure that the granulate doesn't dry up – avoid waterlogging!C over the ecocube with a glass.
  • Remove the glass daily for 1 hour. After about 2-6 weeks at the earliest, the prickly pear begins to germinate and grow slowly. Continue to water moderately.
  • Flowering begins after approx. 3-4 years of growth at the earliest.
  • Even with the best care, fruit formation cannot be guaranteed in this country. Should fruits develop, they can be harvested as soon as they turn yellowish to purple, soft and the thorn hairs come off.
  • As soon as the plant outgrows the ecocube, repot your plant by simply placing the entire ecocube in a flower pot with some soil. The ecocube will slowly decompose and turn into a valuable fertilizer for the plant. Alternatively, it is also possible to just transplant your plant with its compostable planting cup. You can also use your empty cube as a pen holder!
